Although the art of collage dates back over 2000
years, the medium has enjoyed exciting transformations
in the last century thanks in part to modern artists
Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. 20th century painters
explored the possibilities resulting in dramatic,
expressive artworks that left the critics challenged
to interpret. Braque and Picasso were followed by
many other explorers including Henri Matisse whose
famous Blue Nude II is so iconic it defined a style
all its own.
En Colaje is the school of artistic collaging offered
by Artista Creative Safaris for Women. Collage, mixed
media, montage, and assemblage will be employed to
create artworks from a variety of materials. Handmade
papers, fabrics, and found objects are layered onto
paper, canvas, or wood surfaces using acrylic gel
mediums or hot wax as the source of adhesion. The
resulting works are a visual and tactile delight
with luminous layers interacting with luscious textures
and surfaces. En Colaje artistic collaging for women
offers endless opportunities for creative expression,
accessible for beginners as well as experienced artists.
begins
with a welcome orientation your first day in the
studio.
It's the perfect way to get to know your fellow painters
and settle into the pace of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Your first morning will include a brief history of
artistic collage as we review cultural influences
and artistic breakthroughs throughout the centuries.
Shortly after, we’ll explore the wide variety
of visual materials available for use in your creations.
By mid-morning you’ll be immersed in exotic
papers and textiles on your way to creating your
first work.
After a leisurely lunch we’ll resume the journey
by expanding our techniques to include the use of
acrylic paints and gel mediums to build translucent
layers. Utilizing your repertoire of new techniques,
you’ll start your first series of petite collages
on paper.
After dreaming of collage and color all night, you’ll
be brimming with ideas and ready to continue your
journey. After a brief warm up, we’ll delve
into the world of texture and learn how to use collage
as a painting ground to develop rich tactile surfaces.
Additional special effect techniques such as drawing
and stenciling will also be introduced. Soon you’ll
be well into your next series of larger works on
wood panels.
When you return from lunch you might recognize the
familiar and enchanting scent of beeswax. For the
rest of the afternoon we’ll explore alternative
methods of using hot wax and tacking irons to create
collages. This is an optimum time to incorporate
three dimensional objects into your work as almost
anything can be dipped in wax and mounted to your
wood surfaces. Go wild.
Your final day in the studio will include plenty
of free time to finish earlier projects or start
new artworks. Ample opportunity for individual consultations
with your instructor is scheduled around lunch provided
in the studio. We'll engage in a group question and
answer session about different methods of framing
and presentation of your collages. For those who
are interested, we’ll conclude with a brief
discussion called Taking the Leap: launching your
career as an artist.
